In an effort to remove more toxins from my home I went in search of the best, DIY, natural bathroom cleaning products made with essential oils I could find. But can I just be totally transparent for a second here? I don’t clean my bathroom as often as I used to when I was “healthy.” I don’t know about you but I have a hard time finding the energy to clean the most germ-ridden room in the house.
I had to find some tips and tricks to keep my bathroom germ-free and fresh-smelling without heavy chemical-laden products that can wreak havoc on my body.
If you hate to give up your tried and true cleaner for something labeled “all-natural,” I understand totally! I’ve always depended on the fumes and toxic chemicals to ensure I was killing the germs properly. Unfortunately, they not only kill germs but these chemicals are also reported to be harmful to our eyes, noses, skin, lungs, heart, and respiratory systems. Not to mention the environment!
I should also admit I was doubtful that edible ingredients could actually do the job of destroying the germs, grime, and odors in my bathroom. But then I took a look at the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) website. Their whole mission is to equip us with information that will help protect our bodies and our environment. At the time of this posting, they have studied 2,109 products, 197 brands, and 1,000 ingredients in order to provide us with a wealth of information before we make our next cleaning product purchase.
Out of the 226 bathroom cleaners they’ve examined, only 12 scored an A. Forty-one were given a B rating, 21 a C, 65 a D, and 126 (47.5 %) failed their ranking criteria with an F.
Now, if you choose not to make your own products I urge you to check out the EWG website. Choosing products that ranked high in their system (think Mrs. Meyer’s, Method, etc.) will bring you closer to a safer, toxic-free bathroom! Your body and the environment will thank you!
If you want to try making one of these cleaners you’ll want to remember it’s best to keep these mixtures in amber or blue glass spray bottles. The darker color will protect the essential oils from deterioration caused by exposure to light.

Here are a few of my favorite DIY natural bathroom cleaning products made with essential oils:
Daily shower spray
This has been a game-changer for me! Getting down on my knees and reaching and scrubbing can wear me out completely and leave me useless for the rest of the day. That’s why I’ve resorted to this daily shower spray. Vinegar is the main ingredient and is a great disinfectant. Tea tree oil has powerful antimicrobial properties. It kills mold, deodorizes, and is great at killing bacteria! Dr. Axe has an article on the uses and benefits of tea tree oil you can read here. This spray won’t eliminate the task of deep cleaning your bath but it will allow you to stretch out the time between cleanings by quite a bit! Start with a clean shower!
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Cup White Vinegar
- 10 drops tea tree oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
You can adjust the scent – add more lemon if you choose, etc. If you hate the smell of vinegar you can try this recipe…
- 1/2 cup vodka (excellent at killing germs)
- 1 cup water
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
Lavender & Lemon Disinfecting Spray
I found this great recipe from Clean Mama.net. Spray your surfaces. Wait 10 minutes to allow the ingredients to do their job of disinfecting, then wipe clean.
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup vodka
- 10 drops lavender oil
- 10 drops lemon oil
- 1 1/2 cups distilled water
Toilet Cleaner
To deodorize and kill germs on the commode, mix the two ingredients in a spray bottle. Spritz the toilet and let it sit for several minutes then wipe clean. After that sprinkle a bit of baking soda in the bowl and brush with your toilet brush.
- 1 Cup white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp tea tree oil
I totally understand that sometimes the heavy hitters are needed. Especially to get us caught up. But if you have to resort to the toxic cleaners be sure to ventilate your bathroom and only use them occasionally when the job requires.
BONUS TIP!!
Drip a few drops of lemon, lavender or orange essential oil on the cardboard inside your roll of toilet paper. Every time it’s used it’ll leave the bathroom with a nice fresh scent.
