I came down with pneumonia in September of 2014. It hung around for almost 6 months! It was pretty miserable and very draining, to say the least.
While I was waiting for a second appointment with a lung specialist I returned to my primary care doctor due to a sinus and upper respiratory infection. He put me on my third round of antibiotics in a six-month period. It was one thing after another and it wouldn’t go away.
I asked my doctor if he thought my trouble stemmed from a weakened immune system due to all the antibiotics I was given when I was in the hospital that previous June of 2014. (I had either E-coli or salmonella – they couldn’t pinpoint – and they pumped me full of three different antibiotics.) I waited with bated breath for him to give me a list of probiotics and food to eat to rebuild my gut.
I was very disheartened by his response. Basically, he said there wasn’t much proof that antibiotics affect your immune system. Man, I was disappointed! I had been really happy with this doctor up until now.

Some Drs still don't believe antibiotics can affect your immune system - #guthealth #gutbiomeThis goes back to when I wrote about being a critically-minded, well-educated patient. In the end, we’re responsible for pursuing our own health.
The experience gave me a deeper insight into his opinion when it comes to anything natural or homeopathic. I’m not against medication in any way, but I also believe in using food as medicine and other homeopathic remedies to naturally heal our bodies.
I ended up taken the bull by the horns and went on a gut rebuilding regime.
- Kefir in the morning with a scoop of super green food powder.
- A variety of yogurts because they contain different live bacteria cultures.
- Juicing at least four times a week.
- A good probiotic supplement.
By being my own health advocate I was able to strengthen my immune system!
